X Class Diesel Electric Prototype Information

The X Class Diesel Electric mainline locomotive was first ordered from Clyde Engineering in 1966. A further two orders, in 1970 and 1975, with Series 2 and 3 respectively.

The 1st series X Class locomotives, with their EMD 16-567E engines, are capable of outputting 1840HP/1350kW. The 2nd and 3rd series X Class have an up-rated EMD 16-645E capable of an increased 2240HP/1650kW.

The X Class has been used on both Broad and Standard gauges, used for all sorts of traffic, from inter-city passenger services, freight traffic and hauling the crack expresses; Spirit of Progress, Intercapital Daylight, The Overland and the Southern Aurora passenger trains. The X Class has been through running to Sydney on the Standard gauge since 1982.

Today most of the 1st series and 2 of the 2nd series X Class have been rebuilt into the more powerful XR class, using engines from the G class locomotives (EMD 16-645E3C engines), also receiving a number of other modifications.
