Austrains NR Class Diesel Loco

And again The NR:

Just as we were planning on putting the NR tooling away for a long holiday the phone rang from GSR to tell us that six more locos are being repainted in new liveries. These will be two new liveries for the ‘Indian Pacific’ and ‘Ghan’ and now one also for ‘Overland’.

As this is being written NR18 is in Chullora workshops in Sydney being repainted in the new IP colours to be followed by NR76 in Ghan livery. All six locos are scheduled to be painted by the end of the year. GSR have asked us to do a run of the NR in the new colours so who are we to refuse. More on this later. Update 3/2/11 - Seven years after their first release we are now technically Sold Out of both ‘Ghan’ and ‘Indian Pacific’ models. If you missed out on a ‘Ghan’ or ‘IP’ your only hope is to try us at exhibitions. The only survivors may be lingering in the bottom of boxes returned from exhibitions but not unpacked. The contents of these boxes usually does not surface until the next exhibition.

Updates to the NR Class re-run include:

• Work is now complete on the upgrade of the NR class.

• Re-tooling the chassis to accommodate sound speakers
• Working Marker Lights
• Working Ditch Lights
• Coupler "gaps" filled in
• Redesigned frame incorporating openings for DCC Sound speakers (not included)
• For those not using DCC separate exterior switches similar to the CLP / CLF, DL and Y class will enable the marker lights and ditch lights to be switched on and off independently.
• A new mounting system for the couplers has been installed
