80 Class - Prototype Information
The 80 Class Diesel Electric locomotive was introduced by the NSW SRA in 1978. They are a Co-Co bogie arranged locomotive, with 50 members in the class. The 80 class loco produces 2150hp out of the 12 Cylinder AlCo 12-251CE engine.
The 80 Class are a mainline locomotive, used for all sorts of duties while in SRA ownership, generally being used in the area from Broken Hill to Parkes, although they have seen use just about all over the system. They continue to be used all over the country in private ownership, while members of the class have been scrapped or scrapped for spares.
